What with the current economic problems, I've been finding it harder to find time to game. This isn't good as the stress relief and the social connections that I have in the gaming world helps me to deal with the issues that I deal with every day.
Finding work isn't easy in the best of times, but at the moment with more people looking for work than there is work available makes things even worse. The issues are connected to the fact that the work that is available is either the sort that you need specialized skills to be able to do it or the sort of work far too many people are not willing to do because of rather outmoded ideas.
Gaming for me has helped me connect to all sorts of people from all over the world. From the U.S. to all over Europe and Asia, and even people in places like the Philippines and India. It's a great way to get past all of the mindset errors and deal with a person one on one. You find out that we aren't all the different. We all want to feel safe, take care of our families and get a fair pay for work done. It's crazy, but if we just start looking at the things we've got in common and stop looking for ways to demonize someone, maybe we could start fixing some of the problems that we face globally.
Sure, there are a lot of fighting games and war games that have explosions, battles, snipers and lots of killing. But it's a game environment and most of us know that even though it's part of our past and our current lives, there's more to it than just blowing things up. There's the strategy and then there's protecting people, plus teamwork and learning skills to heal, repair and build.
In games we could learn all about history, there are lots of games that offer those views. There's even kids software games that have them experience history interactively. There are so many areas that we use for entertainment, but we've also learned to use games to learn. With sims, skilled interactive teaching programs and more, we can educate new generations faster and easier than the traditional ways.
Technology is the tool to making our future better, gaming and interactive simulation software can help unite us and allow us to start working together to solve our problems. But we need to start moving forward and stop being petty and narrow minded. We all live on this one small planet that's floating in the vastness of space....unlike in games, we've no place else to go...Yet.
So wouldn't it be a good idea to start putting our heads together to make sure that we've still got a tomorrow waiting for the generations of the future? That way, there's someone left here to take that first step to move out into the universe...we either join together and survive as a species, or we eventually end right here...another great experiment in life that failed.
The reality of life is that it isn't a game and there's no hacks, reloading or reset buttons. We get one shot at this whole thing and unfortunately, lately...we've really been messing it up. Maybe it will take the gamers, geeks and creative scientific types to finally come up with something to wake everyone up. One can hope, but the future isn't looking too good from where I'm standing right now.
I really hope that I'm proved wrong...
