I've been a Forgotten Realms Fan since Baldur's Gate and Ice Wind Dale. Others in my family go back farther...like playing Pools of Radiance, Secret of the Azure Bonds, Hillsfar, Eye of the Beholder, Slayer, Ravenloft, The Temple of Elemental Evil, Demon Stone and tons more! Forgotten Realms has been a favorite not just cause of the software games, but because it was one of the original pen and paper RPG environments!
So when I heard the there was going to be a Neverwinter MMO I was really interested in what they were going to do with it. Now I've played DDOnline and it's got it's good and bad points, but for me it was good enough to keep me interested in playing. I'm not what I'd call a diehard player, since I've got lots to do and can't be playing games all the time. But I do like to have my game time when I can get it in. So DDOnline was one of the games the let me play at my own pace and let me revisit locations to replay them and get back into the groove again after being away.
The fact that Neverwinter is going to expand the DDOnline area is okay with me. I like the graphics and the maneuverability of the avatar in the game and I would feel comfortable with the controls to be able to jump right in to the gameplay. But many have negative issues with the monetization aspects of the DDOnline game. But frankly, to me it seems rather short sighted. You get to play for free, you could use cash to upgrade your game experience, but it's not really needed since you can enjoy a gaming session without having to be maxed out on buffs or gear or whatever.
Cryptic Studios is behind this 2011 release and from the website it looks promising. But for me, the D&D 4th Ed. rules are not a first choice as I'm a 3rd Ed. loyalist. So I'll have to see just how things will be implemented into the gameplay before I make a final choice on this being added to my gaming list.
